The IO Oncology Massage is a customized massage designed to meet a client wherever they are in their cancer treatment or journey. Our certified massage therapists have received specialized training allowing them to properly assess, develop and provide a nurturing and supportive massage for each individual client. We recommend 90 minutes for your first massage session at IO. A special intake form must be completed before the first massage service.
The 90 minute oncology massage is highly recommended as the first treatment for a new client.
WHAT IS ONCOLOGY MASSAGE?The IO oncology massage is a highly-specialized massage session that is specifically designed to meet the unique and changing needs of someone in treatment for cancer. This massage is also ideal for a client with a history of cancer treatment. The massage plan is designed and revolves around the side effects (both short-term and long-term) of chemotherapy, radiation and/or surgery.
HOW IS THIS DIFFERENT THAN A TRADITIONAL MASSAGE?
The Oncology Massage practitioners at IO have undergone specialized and rigorous training that is based on understanding cancer as a disease, the various treatments, the numerous side effects, and especially how massage can be integrated into a treatment and wellness plan. The adjustments that might be made in an Oncology specific massage are unique to every situation. The customizations are typically related to session length, pressure, body positioning and areas of specific compromise or concern like mediports, bone metastases or skin reactions to treatment.
