The Mountains are Calling, Part 2

In part one of this blog series, Gena Price, IO’s Massage Director, discussed key yoga poses that focus on flexibility and mobility for muscles that can take a real beating on the trails and the slopes. In this second part, Jennifer Gallegos, IO’s Esthetician Director discusses how to shake up your skincare routine to best prepare and defend yourself against the dry and cold elements on your adventure.

“In preparation for your ski trip or sun exposure at high altitudes, lay off the chemical exfoliants that contain retinol, AHA, and BHA” suggests Jennifer “Opt instead for gentle physical exfoliants before or after activities.” What does she recommend? Luzern Micro Exfoliant is a favorite of hers for its effective but gentle exfoliation. “And consider adding even more moisture to your cleansing routine. It’s so dry this time of year so using oil and balm cleansers can truly help keep your skin supple. In Fiore Lustra or Goop Luminous Melting Cleaners are my go-to cleansers in Winter.”

Once at your destination, she suggests that you load up on antioxidants and boost your hydration before you put on your sun protection layer. “We have many options for antioxidants in our spa, and they are so easy to take on the road.” Arcona Youth Serum, iS Clinical Super Serum/ProHeal, In Fiore Soleil Fleur, Luzern Serum Absolut V15, and so many others are great for antioxidant support. For the total hydration boost, Jennifer likes the Luzern Force de Vie products. “They contain Biodine TRF which assists in the uptake of oxygen and stimulates healthy cell growth.” Finally, before sun protection, give your skin a protective barrier of Arcona Desert Mist to defend against moisture loss.

Even in shade or snowy conditions, sun protection is key. For the face and neck, Jennifer recommends iS Clinical Extreme Protect SPF 30 for broad spectrum physical protection. It contains extremozymes, a proprietary blend of enzymes that are clinically proven to protect skin against environmental aggressors. And don’t forget a SPF lip balm tucked into your pocket before you head out the door.

And when you return from your time on the mountain? Treat yourself to a post-excursion treat. After cleansing your skin, spritz yourself with Josh Rosebrook Hydrating Accelerator followed by the Advanced Hydration Mask. Leave on for 20 minutes and remove with dry cloth. Skin will feel and appear plumped and revitalized.

In a nutshell?

  1. Avoid chemical exfoliation before heading to mountains
  2. Make sure you’re adding moisture at every step - especially cleansing
  3. Put on a serum before hydration and protective barrier
  4. Don’t forget the sunscreen - ever
  5. Pamper yourself after the day with more hydration!
